Question...

Can I use a whey protien shake as a meal replacement shake?

I am wanting to go on a diet and have been looking at meal replacement shakes they are all quite expensive. I would have shakes for some meals and healthy meals at others. Would it be ok if I just used a whey protien shake as a meal replacement if I take vitamins with it?

Thanks

Hi there mate, I'm Phil a Personal Trainer.

Not really no. Even thoughg your consuming calories, the quality of nutrients provided is poor compared to your bodily needs, protein shakes should be used in conjuction with healthy eating habbits. if your wanting to "diet", try ang get hold of "Tom Venuto Burn the fat, Feed the Muscle". and eat healthy, DO NOT DIET, there short term plans which lead to long term failure. Below is some info that will help you lose weight as well as an example of a healthy meal plan. If you want to lose weight, you need to do the following.

1) Burn more calories than you Take in.
2) Consume less than your maintenance target for calorie intake. To figure out this, google "Daily calorie needs calculator and find out how much you need to eat to maintain body weight. When you have this number, eat more to gain weight, less to lose weight.
3) To lose weight, minus 20% of the maintenance weight to achieve how many calories you should eat pe day.
4) Aim for losing 0.5-1 pound of fat per week. Slow loss usually means better reuslts in the future.
5) Carry out exercise, both Cardio and Resistance.

Here's an example of maintenance calorie needs and weight loss needs, Plus an example of a daily meal plan for that individual.

Maintencance 2500 calories per day
Weight loss = 20% off maintenance so 2500 / 100 = 1%
1% (25) x 20 (20% Loss) = 500.
So 2500 - 20% (500) = 2000 calories per day.
Weight Loss Calorie intake = 2000 Cals.

2000 Cals Meal Plan.

Breakfast (375 calories)
1 oz high-fiber breakfast cereal (5 grams or more per serving)
1 slice whole-wheat toast with 1 tsp strawberry jam and 1 tsp trans-free margarine
1 cup fat-free milk
½ cup orange juice
Mid Morning Snack (125 Calories)
Apple
Cereal Bar

Lunch (500 calories)
2 slices whole-grain bread
3 oz water-packed tuna with 2 tsp mayonnaise
2 tbsp of carrots, onions and diced celery
2 slices tomato
¼ cup juice mixed with club soda

Late-afternoon Snack (150 calories)
Trail mix (½ oz almonds with 2 tbsp raisins)
Dinner (775 calories)
1 cup pasta (2 oz dry)
2.5 oz lean ground turkey or extra lean cooked ground beef, lean protein meat.
½ cup tomato sauce
1 cup mixed green salad with 3 tsp olive oil and vinegar dressing
1 cup fat-free milk

Late-night Snack (200 calories)

My opinion is No!

Consider this article about whey protein:

Eat a nutrient-dense plant-based diet and eat all you want and your body will find it's natural weight.

Read the book Eat To Live by Dr. Fuhrman to get all the details.

Also some vitamins are unhealthy and could even be dangerous.

IF you want meal replacement drinks then green smoothies would be the best with 100% natural fruit along with a cup full of kale. You won't get more nutrients and less calories any other way and yes there is protein in kale. Use a machine like the vitamix to make such smoothies. This will retain all the important fiber.
