What Is Whey, And Why Is It So Healthy?

Whey protein is a dairy protein, which is very high in nutritional value. It's a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids and it is also a source of branched chain amino acids too. It is used to promote fat loss by increasing lean muscle mass. So today, whey is no longer seen as just a secondary product in the dairy industry, it's become a very popular supplement.

Whey protein is the highest quality and best form of protein providing the body with the building blocks to produce amino acids used for building muscle tissue. Compared to other sources, whey protein is the best combination of amino acids in the right concentration for optimal performance in the body. Each of the smaller protein sub-fractions has unique biological properties. Hormonal and cellular responses are also enhanced by it.

Whey protein has been shown to increase protein synthesis. It also has powerful antioxidant effects enhancing glutathione levels. Glutathione is a tri-peptide containing one amino acid residue from: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. Glutathione is present in plant and animal tissues and protects skeletal muscle and other tissues from oxidative damage. Glutathione maintains compounds such as iron in its proper oxidation state in hemoglobin. Protein sources that contain high levels of cysteine are effective in maintaining and replenishing whole blood glutathione. Glutathione is the most important antioxidant found in the human body. It is essential for immunity, but also for general well being while reduced levels of glutathione are associated with a large list of diseases.

There have been concerns about the hormone content of whey protein because it's an animal based product. However, the same is true for anything we eat, especially if it is derived from animal sources, and even plants can also contain hormone or hormone-like compounds.

Whey concentrate protein is found in sports supplement protein powder. In the past few decades, whey protein powders have evolved from low-grade concentrates to high-grade concentrates and isolates. The latest type is hydrolyzed protein which is easier to digest.

Whey protein is especially important for bodybuilders and dieters because it helps muscles to recover and grow faster. For people who are on a diet, whey protein offers the possibility of balancing blood sugar levels. When blood sugar level is balanced, you have more energy but do not feel the need to eat a lot. As helpful as such a supplement may be, very high doses can overload the liver and you will not enjoy the benefits of a consistent lower amount.

Recent studies have found that it might reduce cancer rates, combat HIV, increase brain serotonin levels and reduce blood pressure. Isolate whey protein is also given to pregnant women and children. It has been scientifically proven to reduce cholesterol, working as an appetite suppressant, so it can be used for women who are trying to lose weight by eating less. Whey proteins have beneficial effects on the immune system as they help increase the antioxidant Glutathione which strengthens the immune system.

Tastes Great, Mixes Well

I've only had experience with a couple of different protein powder brands, so my review can be taken with a grain of salt. However, I have to admit that this brand is good quality and this specific flavor, Cookies and Cream, is really delicious. When mixed with non-fat milk, it almost tastes like a milk shake. It gives it a creamy texture, and it even has tiny little cookies bits (kind of like Oreos). Even with just plain water, the taste is above average. You're not going to crave the water+powder combo, but it's most definitely drinkable and doesn't taste unnatural like some other powders.

I mentioned that it's good quality because it mixes so damn well! I use a shaker that has one of those metal ball blenders, but honestly I could just leave it out and the shaking alone can mix the liquid and powder. Even with cold liquids, like milk, there are no chunks at all.

I highly recommend this protein powder. It tastes great and mixes well, what more can you ask for?

=======================================================================

Very good Whey

I am a 19 year old college student that was looking for help lifting weights. I have a skinny frame, 6'1" 165 pounds. My friend and lifting partner has been using whey protein for some time and I decided to buy some for myself. The fitness center at my college only sells ON (Optimum Nutrition) 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein. I decided to buy some French Vanilla flavored whey just expecting it to be average tasting. It actually mixes in with milk very well and tastes like a milkshake. I started to notice gains in strength and definition within a couple weeks. ON is a fairly priced protein, but I would not suggest taking the two to three scoops per serving that they suggest. Your body can only take in about one and a half scoops, the rest just runs through your digestive system. I would recommend this protein to anybody that is lifting weights. It is safe, relatively cheap, and works very well. Good bang for the buck!

100% Whey Gold Optimum Chocolate Mint

I have some of this with almond milk, after every work out. It tastes great and a good source of protein.

=======================================================================

money well-spent

i wont see the effect till i get really ripped. but i would say french vanilla taste better than chocolate. it's soooooooooo creamy

=======================================================================

French Vanilla Creme is FAIR

French Vanilla Creme was just bearable. It wasnt very bad, but just bearable enough to keep intaking this for the next 2 months. Will i purchase this again? Nope.

I thought this was going to taste something like mocha flavor, but i was totally wrong. It taste like vanilla with bannana and less tasteful.

I have a very good taste bud since i like to try every food in this earth, including hot and spicy stuff, all meat, pasta, and, maybe, insects.

It can range anywhere from Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mexicans, Thai, Fiji, and Italian food.

Alot of the foods that i eat are very delicious.

But, this is just bearable!

This Stuff is the 'Whey" to Go

What is it? A big jug of protein powder! In fact, you get over 5 lbs!

Okay, you know its protein, and the label says "Whey"- but what exactly is whey? Well, whey, or milk plasma, is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. Most of us know that milk has protein in it, so the stuff in the big black jug here is essentially a milk protein.

So what's the big deal about whey protein? Well, supposedly whey has the ability to be digested quickly, which allows the protein to become available very quickly. Most people use it after workouts to help increase the levels of amino acids in the blood, which are taken up by the muscles to help repair and rebuild them.

As you can tell, people who are physically active are probably going to need this stuff the most. Physical activity normally breaks down the tissues of the body as you use it, and since protein is the building blocks of your tissues, well, lots of physical activity equals higher protein needs. How much more protein athletes need above and beyond sedentary people is a matter of controversy- as is the protein requirements of bodybuilders. However please keep in mind that high protein intake can be hard on your kidneys, because they're the organ that has to deal with this stuff the most, so if you have any kind of kidney issues (i.e. your creatinine is sky high), it'd be best to check with a doc before ingesting huge quantities of protein.

On to the specifics of this particular protein powder. To use it, you simply mix it with water, or any liquid for that matter- then throw it down the hatch. Does it taste good? Well, some people like it and some people don't- me telling you that I like it won't mean much in this case.

Anyway, when all is said and done, this is a decent source of protein for people who don't have time to eat huge chunks of meat, large quantities of eggs, or drink gallons of milk. At 24 grams of protein a serving, this product packs a whallop that can go a long way to help make healthy tissue stronger, or injured tissue healthy. Also recommend Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow if tendinitis interferes with your workouts or activities.

Whey Protein Concentrates

Question...

I heard that Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is the best whey protein?

And I also heard that whey isolates are better than whey concentrates. But when I looked at the ingredients of Optimum Gold Nutrition Standard it says "Other Ingredients: Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate." Why does it have the label concentrate under other ingredients if its suppose to be an isolate and the best whey protein in the market?

Answers...

Answer by Marin3 muscl3
When i went into the supplement store i was planning on buying Nitro-tech hardcore for 0. I spoke to the people there and they told me that the best whey protein around is Optimum Nutrition Gold standard. I ended up buying Gold because it contained 20grams less fat per serve and because of the difference. To answer your question i have no idea. All i know is that its a pretty good whey protein and also tastes real good. I suggest it.

If you've got an opinion about this Whey Protein Concentrates post, then leave a comment...
Whey Protein Concentrate

Back in the history when Whey protein was just introduced in the market, Whey protein powder contained as low as 30-40% protein and contained high amounts of lactose, fats and un-denatured protein. This type of whey protein is known as Whey protein concentrate (WPC).

Nowdays Whey protein concentrate contains around 70-80% of protein with reduced amount of lactose and fats. Because of the marketing of Whey protein Isolates people are under false impression that Whey protein concentrate is inferior to a Whey protein isolate.

I think this is very wrong. Though Whey protein concentrate has less percentage protein than Whey protein isolate, it contains many compounds which are absent in the whey protein isolate.Good quality whey protein concentrate contains higher levels of growth factors such as IGF-1,TGF-Beta 1 and TGF-Beta 2. WPC contains higher levels of various phoso lipids and various bio-active lipids such as conjugated immunoglobulins and lactoferin. Though there is no significant data available to say that these compounds are helpful for muscle mass building and performance but studies do show that these compounds can improve immunity, intestinal health and have many other effects that both body builders and normal people.

The only drawback in using Whey Protein Concentrate is that it contains less protein and high level of Fats and Lactose than a Whey protein isolate if contains are considered in percentage. But this does not mean that Whey Protein Concentrate is always inferior to Whey Protein Isolate. The choice between the Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey protein isolate totally depend on the goals of the individual.

In my opinion Whey Protein Isolate is a better choice for the individual who is tolerant to lactose.

Wiki Whey Protein

Question...

For the people who refuted Whey protein having the highest biological value in humans?

There were a few people who claimed that eggs in fact had the highest biological value posting one single link. This link refered to FOOD not supplements. Can you refute it now?
.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_value
www.wheyoflife.org/benefits.cfm - 21k
www.glyconutrients-center.org/whey-protein.php - 52k
Anyone else can chime in.Including Josecuervo. It was in reference to your question. It's long been known that whey is superior to egg or any other single protein source but it is considered a supplement not a food.Cooking eggs denatures much of the protein anyway.Rendering it useless.
For the_advisor.You're actually completely wrong. Why don't you follow the links that I provided.I don't really care about your opinion because that's the reason I'm posting this in the first plave.Opinion cannot supercede fact in this case. And I have a brand that I've been using for ten years so suggestions of brands aren't necessary. That one is hydrolized so it's already broken down to di-tri peptides.I won't give the name because someone will report me for advertising. So any fiture responses involving opinion will just be ridiculed and laughed off the face of the earth.

Answers...

Answer by the_advisor
I've actually heard that fish protein is the highest biological valued protein.(di-peptides and tri-peptides). This "pre-digested" protein is very soluble and very easy for the human digestive tract to absorb. Studies on human nutrition have revealed that the human digestive tract rapidly absorbs di-peptides and tri-peptides.

Many people are allergic to Whey and Egg so the next best Protein is found in either Fish,Rice protein, pea or hemp.

Answer by atlantisflicka
Yep, whey protein is nature's richest source of biologically active protein. Whey protein contains all the amino acids your body needs in the best balance yet found in any food.

But make sure that the manufactuer of the brand you use do not use 101 additives in the powder, that would be of no health benefit.

Syntha 6 Protein

Question...

What is the best way to take Syntha-6 protein?

I've been taking it for a little over a month now, and i normally take 2 scoops about 20-30 minutes after each workout. I'm really trying to tone up more than anything. Any help would be great!! Thanks a ton!!

Answers...

Answer by mcnewsletters
Sinful, Syntha- 6 is a great tasting and effective protein. However, you must use it properly.

For many years, it was thought that post- workout nutrition (Your intake immediately following the workout) is the most important intake of the day.

This is partially correct.

Recent research has shown that post- workout nutrition is only half of the equation, but I'll get to that in a minute.

The reason post- workout nutrition is crucial to muscle growth is that immediately following a workout, the muscles are like a sponge. They are ready to gobble up any nutrients in the blood stream- protein, carbs, creatine, etc.. to start rebuilding itself. They are starved for nutrients and will put them to good use.

The benefit of a high quality pre- workout intake is that you'll have the nutrients already in your system during the workout. In fact protein synthesis rates are tripled in response to pre- workout protein/ carb mix!

I don't have room to post the whole program here, but I'll leave a link below to a program that's free and has exactly what you need for pre and post workout nutrition.

What Is Whey Protein?

Undoubtedly the most widely used protein dietary supplement readily available currently is whey protein. Whey is but one of the only two important proteins found in milk (the other one is casein) and is usually singled out from milk in the form of by product at the formation of cheese along with casein. Pure whey includes a substantial amount of the milk sugar lactose, in addition to a variety of proteins, fat and cholesterol.

Whey usually, used to be thought to be a waste product and dumped on fields and into the closest body of water. Thankfully whey was observed to possess high standard proteins and so methods had been developed to take out the maximum amount of the undesirable lactose, fat and cholesterol as it can from the protein. Main procedures created integrated acid treatment and also high temperature drying. That, sadly ruined much of the protein and ruined the quality on the protein removed.

Different techniques had been made which could draw out the protein from the whey while keeping its quality. The most common methods currently comprise of ultra-filtration, micro-filtration, ion-exchange and mix flow micro-filtration. Ultra-filtration and micro-filtration use low heat approach where by the proteins can be literally divided through filtration systems. The ion-exchange process gets rid of the protein by way of an ion-exchange line in which takes advantage from the specific electronic charges of the protein, fat and lactose contained inside the whey and uses opposite charges to draw out every individual component. Crossflow micro-filtration uses purely natural, nonchemical ceramic filters to separate the undenatured whey protein away from the fat and denatured protein.

These types of processes result in a high quality whey protein, low in fat and lactose. Consistently be sure to check out the label for what method or methods have been utilised, as several of the cheaper proteins could use whey proteins that have been processed by cheaper acid treatment or higher temperatures and include excessive quantities of undenatured proteins. Undenatured proteins are unusable by your body and result in the whey that has a bitter taste whenever taken. A first-rate quality protein powder will usually write in the ingredients panel or perhaps in the label whether it is microfilltered, ultrafiltered or ion-exchange. If it just lists whey protein concentrate or isolate it is possible to only assume that it consists of a less expensive form of protein.

To develop muscle, you've to train hard, sleep good, and eat your protein. Easy enough actually. But with countless various protein resources available, many people are bewildered in what their individual requirements are and so are not taking in enough and are eating the improper forms of meals. When doing virtually any form of exercising, regardless of whether for strength and muscle increases in the gym, stamina work which includes running, cycling and swimming or for group or specific sports, protein is important for assisting in healing and helping restore injured muscle tissue.

Question...

Should I have breakfast in the morning along with drinking my Isopure Zero Carbs Whey Protein?

I work out 4-5 times a week for at leat 1 hour. I do Power Plate, fast running and serious weight lifting. I have not seen any serious change at my bentch press and I am a little worried that I might not do something wright...
I weight 78 kilos and my height is 1.80m.

I want to gain muscles and I am trying hard but with no serious results for 2 years. Ok, I took some muscles and lost some fat but that's it! I want a six pack and stronger upper body.

Please help.....

Thanks in advance!

Answer by Mikez
Fast running and power plate? You're doing too much cardio and not allowing your body to fully recuperate from all that exercise. If your goal is to truly gain muscle you must first focus on getting stronger and more powerful, muscle will come as a result of this. Concentrate on compound exercises: Squats, Deadlifts, Pull-ups, Standing Overhead Presses, and Bench Presses. Skip machines and stick to free weights.

Squats will give you all the aerobic conditioning you need. Start with some heavy sets/low reps(3-5) of traditional Squats followed with a few sets of lower weight/higher reps (8-12) of overhead squats, then finish off with some lunges and you've got the best muscle building/aerobic workout possible.
And if you want to increase your bench numbers do what I do. Stop benching for a few months and replace it with Standing Overhead Presses, followed with Close Grip Benches this routine will give you huge gains in your Bench. Remember that you won't be able to add serious muscle to your upper body if you neglect the most important part, wich is the lower body. And you should definitely eat breakfast every day.

In case you don't know how top perform some of the exercises:

Benefits of Whey Protein in 2008

In recent years, the subject of whey protein has come up often in health discussions. Know what whey protein is, its possible benefits and side effects and more as you read on.

What is Whey Protein

Whey protein is actually a term used to describe a group of globular proteins that can be separated from whey. When cow's milk is used to manufacture cheese, it also leads to the production of whey, which may or may not be discarded. It is a mixture of lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin and serum albumin.

Similar to protein found in egg white, it can also be irreversibly changed by heat. When made part of the pasteurization process, it becomes less bio-active. If not, whey protein naturally becomes bio-active which basically means it contains a high concentration of cysteine and consequently glutathione, an antioxidant that is essential to improved fitness and health.

Bio-active whey protein is an active source for protein but exposure to extreme heat can easily reduce the amount of cysteine in it without affecting its protein content and basic food value.

What Makes It Good for the Body

Because whey protein contains an inordinate amount of essential and non-essential acids, it frequently plays a prominent role in most low-carb and high-protein diets. Another reason for this is because of its low content of fats and of course, carbohydrates.

Why Pregnant Mothers Love Whey Protein

A number of OBs have advised their gravid patients to increase their intake of whey protein because it will provide the basic amount of amino acids needed by the growing infants inside their bodies. An increased intake of it will naturally improve and speed up the development of the baby. Also, increased intake of whey will indirectly improve the immune system of the baby. In its growing stages, it is highly vulnerable to different types of illnesses. With the help of whey, it grow faster and better and more equipped to defend itself against any health complication.

Whey Protein for Bodybuilding Enthusiasts

For bodybuilders, muscle growth is everything and that's why they love whey so much. Studies have satisfactorily proven that it can lead to acceleration of muscle development. This is welcomed news especially for bodybuilders who are only a few weeks away from the date of competition but is still in high need of muscle growth.

How it Helps Athletes Busy Recovering from Old Injuries

In this case, whey saves the day once more because it can be used to supplement diets of individuals who are suffering from compromised immune systems. Basically, it helps athletes heal faster and feel better.

A Weapon against Degenerative Diseases

Although you can't truly say that any disease is less painful than the other if both have life-altering consequences, it is an inarguable fact however that degenerative diseases are one of the worst health complications to suffer from. These illnesses tend to subject people to a protracted form of suffering and with symptoms with increasing levels of severity. They commonly affect three systems in particular: the nervous system, the muscular system and the skeletal system.

Although rarely curable, degenerative diseases can be treated through chemotherapy, surgical operations and the proper diet. Whey is often a part of this diet because of its rehabilitative benefits especially when it comes to muscle growth. Cancer, diabetes and AIDS have symptoms that causes muscle strength and growth to deteriorate - an undesirable effect that can be combated with increased intake of whey.

Where to Buy Whey Protein

Are you sufficiently convinced of the benefits of whey then? If so, you should be happy to know that you can avail of commercial whey protein product in most supermarkets and specialty food stores specializing in healthy food.

Ending with a Warning

Whey protein is good for the body - no doubt about it - but too much consumption of anything is never beneficial. Too much intake of whey protein can lead to unnecessary complications of your liver. And need we remind you that the liver is the next most important organ in the body? Lastly, lactose intolerant individuals must consume whey isolate rather than the normal variety as the former has less lactose content.

I use only frozen fruit because of where I live.
16-18 oz glass
5 cubes of pineapple
3 slices of peaches
5 strawberries
fill the rest with blueberries
microwave for 40 seconds then add 4 tsp of ground chia seeds, 2 tbs of black strap molasses,
tbs of wheat germ, 1tsp of spirullina, 25 grms of ISOPURE orange protien powder and then i just cover the berries with hemp milk or almond. 1 gram of Acia berry powder.

Then I blend with hand mixer til mixed.

If you've got an opinion about this Zero Carb Isopure post, then leave a comment...
What's in your protein shake....High Cholesterol, Lots of Sugar or Sodium? Is your shake really good for you?

Did you read the label on your protein shake?

After comparing a dozen popular protein powders, I noticed that they vary greatly in health risks with high cholesterol, sugar and Sodium.

• High cholesterol for example...the highest cholesterol I found was a whopping 155 mg per scoop in Syntha-6, which is about the same as a medium sized egg, while several others only had 2.5 mg. When asked about the high cholesterol they said that most of it was from natural sources and was the "good" cholesterol, but then added to be sure and check with your doctor before using.
So if you're fighting cholesterol or want to avoid cholesterol problems in the future be sure to read your label.

• The sugar in a protein shake is usually milk sugar and its called lactose.  It went from 4.5 gm per scoop in True Mass to 0 gm in others...  and True Mass recommends 3 scoops per serving, so you are now up to 14 gm sugar, which is the amount of lactose in a cup of milk, or about 3 1/2 teaspoons of sugar. Then ifyou follow the recommendations, you are to take this 3 or 4 times a day. This not only affects Diabetics and Hypoglycemics but also those who are Lactose Intolerant.  When True Mass was asked about being lactose intolerance, we were told that many users added an enzyme that took care of the lactose, but to talk to your doctor.

• Sodium tends to increase blood pressure so if that is a concern for you, read this.  Sodium went from 160 mg per scoop in Zero Carb Isopure to 3mg in Nitro-Tech. Which meant a single serving of Zero Carb went up to 320 mg per serving. This doesn't seem like much when you consider 1 teaspoon of salt has 2400 mg of sodium. But when an ounce of bacon also contains about 320 mg of sodium, you get a better idea of what this represents.  Then you are supposed to have several servings a day, so you really need to consider if this could be a health hazard for you!!

Now the good news... protein shakes can be a good source of Calcium and Potassium.

• Osteoporosis is linked to low calcium intake.  It causes brittle bones that can break just by bending over. Drinking a protein shake is an excellent way to add more calcium to your diet. Calcium runs from 600 gm per scoop in 100% Casein to as little as 9 mg in other protein powders. The only foods I could find higher in calcium were a cup of either condensed or evaporated milk....or you could eat a
cup of homemade cheese sauce.  So if your family has a history of brittle bones you might want to drink a calcium rich protein shake.

• Potassium helps control your blood pressure. A deficiency causes muscle cramps and weakness.  Potassium runs from 840 mg per scoop in Bio-Pro Blend to 95 mg in others.  Bananas are often recommended by doctors to patients to help increase potassium intake, but they only have about 500 mg each.  The main reason you are drinking protein shakes is for some health benefit. So
make sure you are not putting yourself at risk!  Read the labels, find out what's in your shake, how many scoops are recommended and then how many servings are you supposed to have a day?  You may want to change to a shake that gives
you more health benefits and less risk.

You can see all the protein shakes in a chart for easy comparison when you check out my site at What's in Your Shake?.  I'm not selling protein, nor have memberships etc, but I do have good information that might interest you.

Whey Protein Information

Question...

Does anybody have any information on whey protein shakes?

Im just wondering if this whey protein is used more to bulk up or lose weight as a meal replacement, or both?

Answers...

Answer by Internet makes you stupid
Its mostly used for vomiting. Disgusting.

Answer by slimplan4u
It can be used for both. It depends on how you use it. If you are trying to bulk up you need to drink the shake after you eat a meal. If you want too lose weight then you will need to replace meals. If you are trying to lose weight I would make sure that you are still getting the nutrition you need.

Answer by billyboy64
They are generally used to bulk up. Your body uses protein to build muscle. You should try to get as much protein as you can from your diet, and a protein shake is a good way to supplement.

Whey Protein Information

If you are working out on a consistent basis, you need to be consuming extra Protein; it's as simple as that. Without the added protein intake your muscles will never recover to their full potential, and you won't gain the strength you are striving for nearly as quickly. Protein is the building block for all of your muscles, hair and nails, and it is important to make sure you are getting enough of it.

Out of all the available Protein supplements on the market today, Whey Protein stands out as the clear winner. Whey Proteins are high quality and nutritious proteins derived from dairy products. They contain all of the essential amino acids required by the body each and every day, which promote muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth.
Whey Protein can do a number of amazing things. It increases lean muscle mass, aids in fat loss, enhances your immune function and it actually might help to prevent certain forms of cancer. Whey Protein also helps to stabilize blood glucose levels by slowing the absorption of glucose into your blood stream, which results in a reduced feeling of hunger. Insulin levels also begin to lower when Whey Protein is consumed on a consistent basis which makes it easier for the body to burn fat. Looking at these benefits it is easy to see why Whey Protein can play such an integral role in your diet.

Implementing Whey Protein into your workout routine will help prevent overtraining, because your muscles will be getting the fuel they need to rebuild themselves after a long and hard work out session. It is recommended that you try and get 1 gram of Whey Protein, per pound of body weight. This is most efficiently achieved by spreading your protein intake over 4-6 small meals, and by eating healthy, protein rich foods in conjunction with Whey Protein supplements. You can usually get 20-23 grams of Protein from a single serving of your Whey Protein supplement.

There are many quality Whey Protein supplements on the market today, and many great deals can be found online. It's a common rule of thumb that the more expensive the Whey Protein costs, the better it is going to taste and help you recover. Searching online for special sales and discounts will help you find high quality Whey Proteins for an affordable price. After all, you don't want to be drinking something that you hate the taste of 7 days a week, do you? I usually look for Whey Protein in the price range of 40-50 dollars. This price range is usually associated with quality protein that tastes surprisingly good, and is very good for you in terms of calories and Protein grams per serving amounts.

People of all ages can enjoy the benefits of Whey Protein. The number of benefits it provides is amazing. It helps in sports nutrition, weight management, immune system functioning, bone health and most importantly, your general health. I agree with your first answer, i wouldn't reccommend any of the pills or formulas that you see on tv. almost all of them aren't even approved by the FDA so the risks that are associated with them could be extremely dangerous. the best way to lose weight fast would be to eat healthy and exercise. if you really don't want to do that, drinking slimfast or protein shakes is a great way to get you energy and curb your appetite between workouts. just buy some protein powder at your local health store, much safer than unknown drugs and formulas.

Whey Protein: The Healthy Choice

Healthy diets should regularly include high quality, low fat sources of protein. In order to eat healthy and stay in shape, it is definitely important to find the absolute best sources for your daily protein. If you haven’t yet, you should definitely take a look at whey protein.

Many of you may be asking, “What is whey protein”? If you haven’t heard of it before, it may seem like yet another over-hyped fad that will come and go before the next health trend hits the market. It is important to note that whey protein has been around for hundreds of years and will always be one of the very best sources of protein you can find anywhere!

Remember the old nursery rhyme: “Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey?” Well, Curds and Whey are the two byproducts formed while making cheese from cow's milk. Although cheese is far more familiar, whey protein turns out to be a much better protein for you. It won’t stick to your arteries and veins and is easy to digest. It's also more soluble which means you can absorb more if it. That's one of the reasons why it's also the best type of protein for infants and children.

Doctors and other health professionals have singled out whey protein as an incomparable ingredient for weight loss, immune system support, infant nutrition, and particularly sports nutrition.

All Protein foods are not created equal and can vary in a number of ways including the following:

* Number and quantity of essential amino acids
* Fat content
* Purity
* Digestion and absorption rates

Whey protein is full of rich amounts of all of the essential amino acids, which makes it a very high quality complete protein. It is the richest known source of naturally occurring branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). This is important because the body needs to feed muscles during exercise, and branched chain amino acids provide that energy directly to muscle tissue. Other types of amino acids are first metabolized through the liver. Many athletes have a whey protein shake or drink both before and immediately after exercise or an event to help repair and rebuild lean muscle tissue.

When it comes to a healthy diet, we all know that calories count. You want to make sure that you are getting the most benefit from the calories you consume. Compared to other proteins, whey protein delivers more essential amino acids to the body without the fat or cholesterol, so it allows you to get the most benefit per calorie.

Studies have found that individuals who exercise and combine diets with leucine rich protein foods like whey protein lose more body fat and have more lean muscle tissue. As they lose fat they are able to increase their metabolic rate and naturally burn more calories each day. Whey protein shakes have the added benefit of making you feel full, which helps to manage your weight.

With complex amino acids, low calorie fat burning power, and a fast absorption rate, whey protein is clearly a smart addition to any healthy diet.

Answer by cmantis21
I'm not sure why you would want to do that...when I was looking to gain weight I added 2 protein shakes to my normal diet. 1 before lifting weights and one after. I only used 1/2 the amount of protein powder since I didn't want to bulk up. This made me look healthier and gain about 10 lbs. I only worked out 3 days per week so I wouldn't suggest doing much more than that if you don't want to gain too much weight.

Casein & Whey - A Protein Comparison

Casein & Whey: A Comparison

Casein protein and whey protein are probably the most popular choices of protein supplement today. Both come from milk and both are high quality sources of protein, but they work in entirely different ways. So what's the difference between whey and casein? Read on to find out how these two protein sources can benefit you at different times of the day.

Casein Protein
Micellar casein constitutes around 80% of the protein found in cow's milk (from which casein supplements are made). An attractive property of the casein micelle is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. This provides better nitrogen retention and utilisation by the body.

The disadvantage to a protein that clots and digests slowly is that it doesn't spike amino acid concentration, or spark protein synthesis in a dramatic way. Slow digestion of amino acids is a disadvantage pre and post workout as protein synthesis needs to be induced, and amino acids need to be delivered to muscle cells as quickly as possible

Apart from pre and post workout, and also first thing in the morning, casein supplements are ideal as a slow digesting anti-catabolic protein source. Casein powders can be combined with other protein sources, or taken with meals to boost protein content.

Whey Protein
Whey protein makes up the remaining 20% of the protein content of milk. As far less whey protein is found in milk it is more expensive to extract, and therefore whey is more expensive than other sources oo protein. Whey protein also has a very high level of muscle building amino acids including the BCAAs.

Whey protiein digests very quickly and has been shown to spike amino acid levels and protein synthesis faster than any other source of protein. For pure muscle building power, nothing beats whey protein as it is the most efficient at inducing muscle growth.

The disadvantage of a protein source that digests very quickly is that is also emptys the stomach quickly and therefore doesn't provide a long lasting supply of amino acids. This therefore leads whey protein to be used around workouts and in the morning when a fast digesting source is needed, but at other times of the day casein may be more beneficial.

Casein Or Whey?
As you can see both offer distinct advantages for users. Obviously the best option is to use a whey protein powder when you require a fast digesting protein source that induces muscle building, and a casein protein powder when you require protein for anti-catabolic purposes.

The Natural Dietary Supplement: Whey Protein Isolate

Whey protein isolate is a natural dietary supplement generally employed by musclemen and even sports athletes to aid restoration after workout and to aid muscle growth.

What is Whey Protein Isolate Produced from?

Whey protein comes from milk. You’re maybe acquainted with the thought of ‘curds as well as whey’(even if simply from the nursery rhyme) . Milk naturally separates into these two. The ‘curds’ are the buttery, solid part used to produce cheese. The whey component is basically water and also holds more than 95% of the milk’s albumins and even lactose, and even the majority of the protein with only a minute fraction of the fat. The process of isolation flushes out the leftover fat, the carbohydrate plus the lactose from the whey. This is done by a process of filtration. The last step in the process is to dehydrate the liquid in order to produce whey protein segregate powder. This level is typically for ease of delivery rather than adding something to the process. By the moment it has been prepared, the whey isolate is composed of nearly 95% protein.

Why Utilize Whey Protein?

Everybody have protein by nature in our eating plans as it is important to life. Proteins help the restoration of muscles and bones, they give you energy and are part of the body’s metabolism. Proteins are very important for anyone embarking on a difficult training routine. When the body undergoes rigourous physical exercise, it requires a lot of ‘branched chain amino acids’(if you need to obtain science- y they have name like isoleucine, leucine and valine) . These branch chain amino acids are within great concentration in whey protein. Eventhough it feasible to find these branched chain amino acids in daily food, with the quantity required by the body when in critical exercises, a dietary supplement will give these in a much more compact and even simply digestible form. They will also more than likely provide this protein in a lesser fatty package – making it better.

Other Usages of Whey Protein

It’s use in exercises is the most popular use of it, but by no means the only use. It is also useful for diabetics seeking to regulate their blood sugar levels. Diabetics are at threat of high blood sugar following a high carbohydrate dinner. Getting some whey protein stops this from taking place.

HI JUICY

I have tried 3 or 4 of the leading Whey Proteins only to find they taste not so good. So the other day I opened up a jug of Optimum Nutrition's Whey Protein Vanilla Ice Cream and it's # 1 in my book. The ingredients are great, the taste is great and it's very easy to mix or shake.

You get 23 grams of protein in every scoop and the glutamine is 3 grams or more. Plus you have the other amino acids all in a one shake that goes done easy. I will continue to use this product and try some other ones from Optimum Nutrition.

Yo Juicy! Whey is a waste product or a product made from waste, however you want to put it. Yes, you get the protein you need but unfortunately you can & most likely will also get a lowered immune system which means colds, flu's & viruses. I've been using RICE PROTIEN for about ten years now. Works awesome & doesn't have any of the crap in it you are trying to avoid. NutriBiotic makes a great one & it's 100% natural. They don't even use chemicals to process it(what a concept! ). Glad you're going back to the gym. Shiver git girl!

Whey Protein Fights Cancer, Improves Immunity, And Other Health Benefits

Studies on whey demonstrate it's an even better protein supplement than previously thought. Although whey protein's health benefits have only recently been elucidated, the use of whey protein for medicinal purposes has been prescribed since the time of Hippocrates. In fact, there are two ancient proverbs from the Italian city of Florence that say, "If you want to live a healthy and active life, drink whey," and, "If everyone were raised on whey, doctors would be bankrupt."

In previous issues, we've chronicled the extensive research showing the many potential health benefits of whey protein concentrate. The majority of that research was done in the 1980s and early 1990s, and was extremely persuasive. Scientists have continued their research on whey proteins with even more impressive results. What follows is some of the more current, interesting and useful research on whey proteins.

Whey and Cancer

Additional studies have been done on animals regarding cancer-causing chemicals to see what effects whey protein concentrate would have on cancer prevention or treatment. Scientists fed rats various proteins and then subjected them to the powerful carcinogen dimethylhydrazine.

As with the previous research, the rats fed whey protein concentrate showed fewer tumors and a reduced pooled area of tumors (tumor mass index). The researchers found whey protein offered "considerable protection to the host" over that of other proteins, including soy. 1

Even more exciting, in vivo research on cancer and whey showed whey protein concentrate inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells at low concentrations (Baruchel S. and Vaiu G., Anti Cancer Research, 1996). Finally, and most importantly, a fairly recent clinical study with cancer patients showed a regression in some patient's tumors when fed whey protein concentrate at 30 grams per day. 2

Whey and Glutathione

This new research using whey protein concentrate led researchers to an amazing discovery regarding the relationship between cancerous cells, glutathione (GSH) and whey protein concentrate. It was found that whey protein concentrate selectively depletes cancer cells of their glutathione, thus making them more susceptible to cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.

It has been found that cancer cells and normal cells will respond differently to nutrients and drugs that affect glutathione status. What is most interesting to note is the fact that the concentration of glutathione in tumor cells is higher than that of the normal cells that surround it. This difference in glutathione status between normal cells and cancer cells is believed to be an important factor in cancer cells' resistance to chemotherapy.

As the researchers put it, "Tumor cell GSH concentration may be among the determinants of the cytotoxicity [poisonous to cells] of many chemotherapeutic agents and of radiation, and an increase in GSH concentration appears to be at least one of the mechanisms of acquired drug resistance to chemotherapy."

They further state, "It is well-known that rapid GSH synthesis in tumor cells is associated with high rates of cellular proliferation. Depletion of tumor GSH in vivo decreases the rate of cellular proliferation and inhibits cancer growth."

The problem is, it's difficult to reduce glutathione sufficiently in tumor cells without placing healthy tissue at risk and putting the cancer patient in a worse condition. What is needed is a compound that can selectively deplete the cancer cells of their glutathione, while increasing, or at least maintaining, the levels of glutathione in healthy cells.

This is exactly what whey protein appears to do. In this new research it was found that cancer cells subjected to whey proteins were depleted of their glutathione, and their growth was inhibited, while normal cells had an increase in GSH and increased cellular growth.

These effects were not seen with other proteins. Not surprisingly, the researchers concluded, "Selective depletion of tumor GSH may in fact render cancer cells more vulnerable to the action of chemotherapy and eventually protect normal tissue against the deleterious effects of chemotherapy." The exact mechanism by which whey protein achieves this is not fully understood, but it appears that it interferes with the normal feedback mechanism and regulation of glutathione in cancer cells.

It is known that glutathione production is negatively inhibited by its own synthesis. Being that baseline glutathione levels in cancer cells are higher than that of normal cells, it is probably easier to reach the level of negative-feedback inhibition in the cancer cells' glutathione levels than in the normal cells' glutathione levels.

Whey and LDL Cholesterol

The positive health benefits of whey protein concentrate does not end with its effects on immunity and cancer prevention and treatment. Whey protein concentrate also was found to be a potent inhibitor of oxidized low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Current research suggests that the conversion of LDL to oxidized LDL is the trigger that leads to atherogenesis... the formation of the plaque and lesions associated with atherosclerosis.

Therefore, any substance that prevents the oxidation of LDL is thought to be anti-atherogenic. Though animal-based proteins have traditionally been implicated as being pro-atherogenic, whey proteins appear to be an exception to the rule. whey protein is made up of several minor and major fractions, such as beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, albumin, lactoferrin and immunoglobulin. It was discovered that the minor constituent responsible for the ability of whey protein concentrate to prevent the oxidation of LDL appears to be the lactoferrin fraction of the protein. 3

Lactoferrin In Whey

When the lactoferrin was removed from the protein, the ability of the whey-protein concentrate to prevent LDL oxidation was greatly reduced, leading the researchers to speculate, "Our results suggest that LF (lactoferrin) is the main factor responsible for the inhibitory effect of whey protein (on LDL) and it may function synergistically together with other factors in the whey protein, for example, alpha-lactalbumin."

Another study using rats examined the effects of whey protein concentrate and casein on cholesterol and the risk factors of heart disease. Though casein (another milk-based protein commonly used in research) is known to raise cholesterol in humans and animals, whey protein has the opposite effect, leading the researchers to note, "At the high dietary protein level [300 gram per kilogram of feed] , whey protein significantly lowered plasma and liver cholesterol and also plasma triacylglycerols." 4

The cholesterol-lowering effects of whey protein concentrate in this study also was associated with a reduction in LDL cholesterol. Most interesting was the fact that this effect on cholesterol was not seen when the animals were fed amino acid mixtures that simulated whey protein, so it is clear that there are properties within the whey that have these effects beyond that of its amino acid profile.

Whey and Bone Growth

Finally, whey protein appears to play a direct role in bone growth. Researchers found that rats fed whey protein concentrate showed increased bone strength and bone protein such as collagen. This discovery led researches to test whether or not whey protein directly stimulated osteoblast (bone cell) growth in vitro.

Whey protein was found to stimulate, dose dependently, total protein synthesis, DNA content, and increased hydroxyproline contents of bone cells. 5

It should be noted that not all whey protein concentrates are created equal. Processing whey protein to remove the lactose and fats without losing its biological activity takes special care by the manufacturer. The protein must be processed under low temperature and low acid conditions so as not to "denature" the protein. Maintaining the natural state of the protein is essential to its biological activity.

These research findings, combined with the previous decade of study on whey protein, should convince anyone that whey protein concentrate is truly the life-extension protein.

Higher Glutathione Levels and Whey

A decade-and-a-half of findings on the benefits of whey protein are far-reaching.

Previous Studies Include The Following:

* Whey protein concentrate dramatically raises glutathione levels. Glutathione is an essential water-soluble antioxidant in the body that protects cells and serves as a primary detoxifier of harmful compounds such as peroxides, heavy metals, carcinogens and other toxins.

* Glutathione also is intimately tied to immunity, and reduced glutathione levels have been associated with disease such as AIDS, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, to name only a few. In fact, glutathione levels appear to be one way of modulating immunity. 6

* Whey protein concentrate was found to consistently raise this extremely important immune stimulating antioxidant beyond that of any protein studied (including soy) to higher than normal levels in multiple animal studies. 7

A small pilot study with HIV-positive men who were fed whey protein concentrate found dramatic increases in glutathione levels of all the study participants, with two out of three men reaching their ideal body weight. 8

In fact, there have been several U.S. and international patents granted for the treatment of AIDS and improving immunity with whey protein concentrates.

* Whey protein improves immune function and fights infections. Animals fed whey protein concentrate consistently showed dramatic enhancement of both the humoral and cellular immune response to a variety of immune challenges, such as salmonella, streptococcus pneumonia 9 and extreme cancer-causing chemicals. This effect on immunity was not seen with other proteins.

* Whey protein concentrate fights cancer. Animals fed whey protein.
